The student dress code at the elementary level is quite simple.
- No bare feet
- No brimmed hats or hoods in school
- No spaghetti straps
- No short shorts/skirts
- No distracting hair, makeup, earrings, etc.
- No bad pictures or words on clothing

Toys, cards, and other items for play are not allowed. Disallowed items will be confiscated. The first time the item will be returned to the student at the end of the day. Every time after that the parent must come to retrieve the item or call to request what they would like the school to do with the item.
Students may have cellphones or smart watches but they cannot use them during school hours. The school district assumes no responsibility for these devices. Educators are to confiscate cellphones and smart watches if students use them during school hours. The first time the device will be returned to the student at the end of the day. Every time after that the teacher or office will contact the parent that day and discuss what to do with the device. Students who habitually abuse the ability to have a device with them at school will have to turn in their device to their teacher each morning. Students who refuse to follow this policy may be suspended.
Parents contact the office in order to get a message to or to speak with their child. Please understand that though these devices can be convenient and helpful when used appropriately, they can also be distracting and cause the school a lot of unnecessary problems.
Students may wear costumes for Halloween as long as they are appropriate for the elementary school environment.
No: Full-face masks, gore, weapons, or oversize costumes (students will still be participating in a full-day of school). Costumes must meet student dress standards for modesty.
Yes: Face paint, little blood, masks from the nose down, and costumes that are appropriate for five-year-old children.
Inappropriate costumes will be handled in the same way that we handle dress code violations. The student is not in trouble but will not be allowed to return to class until the costume is appropriate.
Each school serves the students that live within their physical boundary. Click here to see East's boundary. In many school districts students must attend their boundary school. Iron County School District is what's called an Open Enrollment district. This means that parents may apply with the district offices to have their child attend any school as long as it is not closed due to over enrollment. Parents must provide transportation to and from school if they choose an out-of-boundary school. Students must maintain acceptable attendance and behavior in order to take advantage of this privilege.
According to Utah Code § 53A-3-402(6), students may be enrolled in Kindergarten who are at least five years of age before September 2nd of the year in which admission is sought.
Kindergarten Registration occurs in March each year. Parents may continue to register from then on.
Students will not be assigned a teacher or a class until after Kindergarten students have been tested. This is to give time for Kindergarten teachers to assess each child’s current knowledge and ability. Teachers will assign a specific date and time for each individual to be assessed. Parents will be contacted once the students have all been placed. Kindergarten starts two weeks after regular classes begin.
Students who enroll after Kindergarten classes have begun will be assessed by a Kindergarten teacher or aide. The teacher who is assigned the student will contact parents.

Optional Extended-Day Kindergarten (OEK) is a state program for struggling Kindergarten students. It's designed to help the lowest performing students who would benefit from extended instruction.
- A student is identified as a candidate for the OEK program when he or she fails to show basic competency in Kindergarten appropriate knowledge and skill.
- Parents of students who would benefit from OEK will be contacted and given the option of enrolling their child. Teachers will clarify program benefits and requirements.
- OEK classes need to be smaller than other Kindergarten classes.
- Students who may not participate in OEK:
- Students with an IEP who would not benefit
- Students that cause excessive disruption
- Students who do not yet have the maturity to make it through the day
- Students with poor attendance
Students may be removed from OEK if they cause excessive disruption or have poor attendance. Teachers will contact parents to notify them in these cases. If things do not change after parents are notified the child will be removed from the program. Teachers will give parents three school days notice when a child is being removed from the program.
Temporary Nature of OEK
The purpose of OEK is to close the achievement gap for struggling Kindergarten students. Once students have reached the Kindergarten level they are removed from the program to make room for students who need additional help. Teachers will give parents three school days notice when a child is being removed from the program.
Children are wonderful, complex little beings that we absolutely love! They are usually kind and compassionate. Sometimes they do and say things that may hurt others because they are mostly focused on themselves. Children are also learning they have some control over their environment and the adults in their lives. It is a natural part of every child's development to embellish and exaggerate. Please remember these things when your child shares something that may alarm you.
Schools are very similar to homes in that you have adults who are responsible for the safety and proper upbringing of children. Just like at home, there are occasional fights and conflict. This is perfectly normal child behavior. Just like at home, we do not call child conflict 'assault' or 'bullying.' Just like at home we don't believe everything children say. Please give us some of your trust in all of this by doing the following.
Please ask clarifying questions of your child. In many cases this simple practice will alleviate your concerns. Please contact your child's teacher with the intent to learn more about the situation. Please remember that in every case we're dealing with small children with little experience in life. Please give the school the benefit of the doubt.
We are happy to help in every situation. Please don't hesitate to contact your student's teacher when these things arise. We joke with parents that if they won't believe everything their child says about us, we won't believe everything their child says about them. 😉
In the case where what alarmed you is true, we will do everything we can to protect your child and provide the most loving learning environment we can.
It is a priority of the Iron County School District to resolve parent or community concerns through a timely, well-structured process. Below you will find the steps that will help us to best resolve any concerns you many have.
- The parent brings their concern to the teacher.
- If the concern persists, the parent then contacts the principal.
- If the concern persists, the parent then contacts the district director.
- If the concern persists, the parent then contacts the superintendent.
- If the concern persists, the parent then contacts the Iron County School Board.
Please follow these steps when you have concerns. Experience shows that following these steps will bring about the best and quickest results.
The word 'bullying' has become overused in our society. It's important to define what bullying is and explain what it is not.
What bullying is
- Verbal, physical, or social behavior that intends to cause harm
- Harm caused through an imbalance or perceived imbalance of power (strength, social status, embarrassing information, etc.)
- Ongoing or repeated over time
What bullying is not
- Single or isolated incidents of conflict or a fight between equals
- Mutual arguments or disagreements
- Someone not wanting to be someone else's friend
- Normal childish behavior such as butting in line, pushing, or even hitting in an isolated event
When bullying is reported an educator investigates by talking to the individuals involved and any witnesses to events. If it is determined that bullying is not occurring but it is rather student conflict, the educator works with the individuals involved, the teacher(s), and the Wellness Center staff to work things out. If it is determined that bullying is occurring, the educator notifies the principal and a plan is devised to protect the victim and give consequences to the one bullying. We never call any child a bully. We choose not to villainize children but rather work with them to improve their behavior through consequences, instruction, and support. Depending on the situation students may be suspended or parents may be required to attend a safe schools hearing.
We have both an English as a Second Language (ESL) and Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program at East Elementary. All English learning students are given the services they need to succeed.
- Kindergarten students are served through the ESL program.
- 1st and 2nd grade students are served through DLI only.
- 3rd - 5th grade students below a 4.0 English rating are served through both ESL and DLI.
- 3rd - 5th grade students above a 3.9 English rating are served through DLI only.
- English learners who do not participate in DLI will be served through the ESL program regardless of their grade level.
All visitors are to check in at the office and wear a visitor’s badge.
During the pandemic, visitors must have a temperature check and complete a checklist for symptoms.
During the pandemic, everyone must wear a mask while in the building.
ID is required to check students out early.

School surveillance cameras are provided to act as a deterrent to undesired behavior, provide school personnel with investigative support, and to promote safety on and near campus. Recorded and live video are only available to designated district and school personnel. Law enforcement may gain access through subpoena or if requested by district or school administrators. There is no expectation that personnel continuously monitor video. Recorded video will be retained for 10 - 14 days. Parents are not permitted to view recorded or live video unless district or school administrators invite them to do so due to a school investigation. District policy prevents the release of recorded video to parents, businesses, or community members. School surveillance cameras are for district and school purposes only.
We're excited to have this resource to make our school as safe as possible. We understand that parents or others may want access to video. Please understand that we have to follow strict laws and guidelines surrounding privacy, confidentiality, and authorized access. Even though we are not able to show parents and others actual video, we are happy to investigate school related issues and share what we find.

The purpose of public schools is to ensure that all students learn state curriculum at high levels. Though there are many good opportunities in the community, it is not the purpose of schools to advertise, encourage participation, or further political or private agendas for businesses, groups, and individuals. Many people request that schools provide them with time, facilitate donation drives, encourage student participation in their programs, or for help in distributing their materials. Schools must be selective in honoring such requests due to the impact on the school and the parents of students. We are focused on achieving our purpose, which is to ensure that all students learn state curriculum at high levels.
We have tried on multiple occasions to recycle with the university, businesses, and volunteers. In every case we were forced to stop due to logistical and financial reasons. These issues include: the closest solid waste recycling center is in St. George, confidentiality and privacy, the sheer amount of recyclables a school creates, changes in the personal circumstances of those involved, and the expensive nature of recycling. Please understand that we would love to recycle but are not able at this time. For people that would like to help the school recycle, we are happy to provide bins for the purpose and train our students and staff to gather the recyclables. This is, however, the extent of what the school can do. Our personnel have demanding responsibilities and schedules as it is. Volunteers would need to take responsibility for all other aspects of the project.
