Our Most Important Curriculum 2016-17

Kindergarten 

Reading 1 Know and apply phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Reading 2 Read emergent-reader text with purpose and understanding. 
Writing 1 Writes lower and upper case letters.
Writing 2 Draw, dictate, and narrate events, understand and use chronological order, and give reaction to story events. 
Math 1 Know number names and counting sequence. Count the number of objects. Identify and compare quantities and numerals to 20. 
Math 2 Understand addition as adding and subtraction as taking away.

1st Grade

 Reading 1 Know and apply phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
 Reading 2 Explain major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information. 
 Writing 1 Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence: first word, capitalization, and punctuation.
 Writing 2 Write a paragraph in which students name a topic, supply some facts about a topic, and provide some sense of closure.
 Math 1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems with unknowns in all positions.
 Math2 Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.

2nd Grade

 Reading 1 Know and apply phonics and word decoding skills.
 Reading 2 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
 Writing 1 Write opinion papers in which they introduce the topic or book, state an opinion, support the opinion, use linking words to connect opinions and reasons, and provide a concluding statement.
 Writing 2 Write informative papers in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points and provide a conclusion. 
 Math 1 Accurately and fluently add and subtract within twenty.
 Math 2 Understand that the three digits in a three digit number represent ones, tens, and hundreds.

3rd Grade

 Reading 1 Read and comprehend grade-level text.
 Reading 2 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
 Writing 1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting their point of view with reasons.
 Writing 2 Write informative/explanatory text to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
 Math 1 Fluently add and subtract within 1,000. 
 Math 2 Interpret products of whole numbers.

4th Grade

 Reading 1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text explicitly says and when drawing inferences.
 Reading 2 Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details. Summarize the text.
 Writing 1 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose,and audience.
 Writing 2 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
 Math 1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
 Math 2 Multiply a whole number of up to 4 digits by a one digit whole number.

5th Grade

 Reading 1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
 Reading 2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.
 Writing 1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
 Writing 2 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. (compare and contrast)
 Math 1 Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths, focused on basic math facts
 Math 2 Understand the place value system to round decimals to any place.
